When you arrive in Oxford, it’s exciting but can also be overwhelming. Every sign, every conversation, every café order is suddenly in English.
You’ve studied grammar. You know vocabulary. But how do you ask where the bus stop is? How do you explain that you’re new? How do you join a conversation without feeling unsure?
At the College in Oxford (CIE), we begin every morning with a session designed to answer those questions. It’s called Functional English, and it’s here to help you use English, not just study it.

What Is Functional English?
Functional English is about real communication in everyday life. It prepares you to speak clearly, listen effectively, and interact confidently with people around you.
At CIE, you start each day with a practical class focused on the English you’ll actually use:
- Ordering lunch
- Asking for help
- Making and changing plans
- Explaining a small problem
- Starting and finishing conversations
It’s the language that gets you through your day and helps you become part of Oxford life.
What Happens in Class?
Each session begins with a focused topic, such as “asking for directions” or “speaking with your host family.” Your teacher introduces key phrases and expressions, and explains how they’re used naturally.
Then you practise through:
- Role-play and dialogue
- Pair and group speaking tasks
- Listening to real speech patterns
- Short “mini-missions” to try out later that day
Mistakes are welcome, in fact, they are necessary. Your teacher will help you improve without pressure. Because CIE keeps classes small, everyone gets a chance to speak and receive personal guidance.

Oxford Is Part of the Lesson
Functional English doesn’t stop when the class ends.
You’ll use it across the city immediately:
- Ordering food at the Covered Market
- Asking a local for directions
- Talking to a host family or shop assistant
- Describing something you saw in class
Some days, you might be given a real-world task to try:
“Ask for something that’s not on the menu.”
“Explain a small problem clearly and politely.”
“Start a conversation with someone new.”
These small challenges help you turn vocabulary into real communication.

How Is This Different from General English?
CIE offers both Functional English and General English. Each has a different goal, and both support your progress.
| Functional English | General English |
| Everyday communication | Academic accuracy and fluency |
| Real-life speaking and listening | Grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing |
| Small group tasks and scenarios | Structured coursebook learning |
| Immediate use in Oxford | Long-term academic development |
You begin your day with Functional English. It warms up your speaking, builds confidence, and prepares you for the rest of your classes and your life in the UK.
