When I came to Oxford, came to CIE. I was very nervous about teachers, classmates. Luckily, the teachers and classmates are the best, I have never met. I have been studying for two months and I think I improve a lot.

I would like to introduce my town Asakusa in Tokyo, Japan.

I was born in Shinjuku in Tokyo but moved to Asakusa which in my husband’s town after I’d got married.

Asakusa is one of the most popular tourist sites not only in Tokyo but in Japan, because it still remains an old-style of Tokyo.

The first place to go is “Senso-ji”, Tokyo’s largest Buddhist temple.  You mustn’t miss the “Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate)”.  It looks like a building but it is a gate.  It holds a big lantern and two statues of guardian gods Raijin (god of
thunder) and Fujin (god of wind).  The gate is named after these two statues.  Photos or postcards are often taken of this gate.  Behind the gate, a shopping arcade “Nakamise” leads up to the temple.  You can enjoy shopping and eating. If you like sweets, why not try some common Japanese sweets, such as Senbei (rice cracker, but not sweet) or Okoshi (sweet rice cube). In particular, “Agemanju” looks like Tempura, but it’s sweet.

If you come to Asakusa in May, you should set the plan on the third weekend because “Sanja Matsuri festival”, Tokyo’s largest festival, is held then.  The most exciting event of this festival is carrying “Mikoshi” which is like a small shrine.

If you come in summer, you can see “the Sumida river fireworks festival”.  This festival is also one of the most famous ones in Japan, even though the size of fireworks is smaller than in the others.  The reason why is that it has been held since the Edo-period.

Anyhow, Asakusa is a famous tourist site in Japan, so it is impossible to say everything about my town in a few words.
