Pre-University Business Foundation Course

The course

The Foundation Course in Business Studies is a seven month programme which prepares students from abroad for university entry. Oxford Brookes University professors moderate the work of the students and recognises the Foundation course, which it regards as being equivalent to NQF level 3.

Students in the past have gone on to study at universities such as SOAS, University of Surrey, Sheffield University and Glasgow University.  All universities where students have applied have accepted our Foundation Course certificate.

The Business Foundation course includes:

Business Topics

Topics will include the following:

  • People, Motivation and Operations Management
  • Marketing
  • Finance, Accounting, IT and Maths
  • Objectives and Strategies – Setting up a Business
  • External Influences – Business and Law, Ethics and Social Responsibility
  • Business English

IELTS Preparation

You will have lessons each day preparing specifically for the IELTS examination. In order to complete the course successfully, you will need to achieve a score of at least 6.0 on the IELTS examination, which meets the English language requirements of most universities in Britain.

Academic Study Skills

You will learn study skills necessary for studying in the UK including:

  • Structuring an essay
  • Presenting an argument
  • Source evaluation
  • Referencing

Advice for University Entrance

You will have regular meetings with the Student Support Officer and receive individual advice about:

  • The different University options
  • The courses which best suit your needs
  • The University application process

All course materials are provided.

You will receive a certificate at the end of your course stating your level according to the Common European Framework.

Award Levels

  • 40-54% = Pass
  • 55-69% = Merit
  • 70% + = Distinction

Pass Rates from 2009-2014

  • 2009 – 100% Pass rate (All with Merits)
  • 2010 – 90% Pass rate (60% with Merits)
  • 2011 – No students on the course
  • 2012 – 100% Pass rate (50% with Merits, 25% with a Distinction)
  • 2013 – 100% Pass rate (100% with Merits)
  • 2014 – 100% Pass rate (100% with Merits)

If a student is unhappy about their award, they may appeal to the Principal who, in consultation with the Oxford Brookes moderator, will consider this appeal. It will be considered within two weeks of being received, and the student will be informed of the decision by email within 24 hours of the decision being made.
